This push for its own republic plunged the country into a civil war referred to as Nigeria- Biafra War that lasted for 3 years between 6 July 1967 – 15 January 1970.

About 2 million lives were estimated to have been  lost due to hunger, starvation and killings.

In 2012, a young Ibo(Nigerian)-British citizen by name Nnamdi kanu formed a new biafran group called Indigenous People of Biafra(IPOB) which he is the leader.

IPOB’s agenda is to ensure the break away from Nigeria and become an independent nation for Ibo people of Nigeria.

They alleged that the amalgamation of 19 14  by  Lord Fredrick Lugard was a complete scam as they see nothing common between the northern and southern Nigeria.

Nnamdi Kanu is currently standing trial by the government of Nigeria for treason and other charges.
